We shared the answers that Juan José Serra, Agronomic Engineer and Regulatory Affairs Manager at LIDA Plant Research, have given to The European Biostimulants Summit 2019 organization. He will be joining use as speaker discussion new regulations that will be coming into effect in 2018/2019.

Interview

-What new regulations do you foresee coming in 2018/2019?

New European fertilising regulation, repealing Regulation 2003/2003. New regulation on organic farming detailing rules for the implementation of Regulation (EU) No 2018/848, and including a list of approved substances for organic farming.

-How do you see these impacting the way companies do business moving forward?

We are in a crucial moment, companies are making profit of new technological advances, new substances and by-products have come into scene and are eligible to be used by companies and, thus, increase the amount of products to be set in the market.  Therefore, new regulations have to be very clear and concise. In order to avoid the misuse of new products and to prevent human and environmental health. Companies are going to take an step forward in their business.

-Without giving too much away, how easy will it be to comply with these regulations and what how can companies prepare for this?

As with every new regulation, there is going to be a bit of uncertainty at the beginning, and there will be corrections to be made. But I don’t think companies will have many difficulties in adapting to the new regulations. Companies are already preparing themselves for changes and have people working on these issues.

-How serious are implications of non-compliance?
Quite serious. We have to be able to remove every snake-oil product from the market. For the benefits of our health and the environment.

-You are speaking at the 3rd European Biostimulants interactive summit in Madrid in January 2019. What are you most looking forward to at the event?

I am looking forward to talking to people of other companies and share points of view on regulations and other fields of work. That helps me to obtain a broader knowledge of the agronomic sector.
